Alpha President Named ABC South Texas 2013 Chapter Chair

The South Texas Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has recently named Kathy Acock, President of Alpha Building Corporation, Chapter Chair for 2013. Mrs. Acock, a long-time member of ABC, will be working with a diverse Board of 20 individuals. These industry professionals have backgrounds in various trades including: general contracting, specialty trades contracting, professional consultants in the legal, accounting and insurance sectors. This board represents approximately 250 member firms throughout the San Antonio region.
Alpha Receives Accredited Quality Contractor Designation

The Associated Builders & Contractors national association has designated Alpha Building Corporation as an Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC) for a sixth straight year. The AQC program publicly recognizes and honors construction firms that have documented their commitment in five key areas of corporate responsibility: quality, safety, employee benefits, training and community relations.

Alpha Helps to Honor Walter Cronkite

The University of Texas at Austin recently dedicated the Walter Cronkite Plaza, located in College of Communication complex, to honor his legacy of exceptional journalism. As part of the dedication the university also unveiled “And That’s the Way It Is”, a dynamic art installation by media artist Ben Rubin. This public art display illuminates the face of the Communication A (CMA) Building with choreographed text of some of Cronkite’s most famous broadcast transcripts.
The preparation and installation of this amazing digital art project was done by Alpha Building Corporation. Alpha prepared the building façade for the display and installed new outdoor seating areas in the plaza. In addition, Alpha furnished the projectors used for the display, as well as providing the infrastructure for the projectors. Alpha has always been proud to work in collaboration with The University of Texas on such distinguished and noteworthy projects. Alpha President Selected as Panelist for Leadership Conference

The San Antonio Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction has selected Kathy Acock, President of Alpha Building Corporation, as a panelist for the 2012 Women's Leadership Conference. The panel will consist of San Antonio’s top women leaders who will share their personal experiences on how to succeed within the construction industry in these tough economic times. This year's conference theme is "Survive & Thrive - Succeeding in Challenging Times". This one day event will be held on March 1st at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. This is the second time in a row that Kathy has been invited to participate as a panelist. Alpha Employees Achieve LEED Green Associates Certification

Alpha is pleased to announce the LEED Certification of two Alpha team members. Karen MacEntee, Project Engineer, and Diana Alarcon, Project Engineer/Estimator, have received their LEED Green Associates certification. The certification is given by the globally recognized Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) to professionals who demonstrate core knowledge of green design, construction and operations. By obtaining this certification Alpha hopes to further the mission of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in transforming the way building and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves quality of life.
Alpha Building Corporation Awarded Statewide Contract

Alpha Building Corporation has been awarded a statewide Job Order Contract for Texas by TCPN, a national governmental purchasing cooperative. Alpha’s TCPN Job Order Contract is available for use by public and private schools, colleges, universities, cities, counties, non-profits and governmental entities. This competitively bid, firm fixed price contract will allow entities the ability procure minor construction and renovation services on an as needed basis while taking advantage of reduced procurement and project completion times. Because the contract solicitation was qualifications based, the client will be assured of getting the services of a qualified, experienced general contractor like Alpha.

Alpha Received STEP Safety Award

On October 13 the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) presented Alpha Building Corporation with a Gold level STEP award as part of the Construction Excellence Awards ceremony. Kathy Acock, President, and Ron Fuller, Director of Safety & Quality Control accepted the recognition for this corporate wide achievement. This is the sixth, consecutive STEP award that Alpha has received for it’s exceptional safety program. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
Alpha Director Speaking at CAPPA

Andrew Hicks, Director of Business Development for Alpha, will once again be teaching at the annual CAPPA conference in Springfield, Missouri. CAPPA is the Central Association of Physical Plant Administrators whose purpose is “develop and maintain high standards in the administration, maintenance, operation, planning, and development of physical plant facilities of institutions of higher learning, and to promote professional ideals and standards to better serve the objectives of higher education”. Andrew will be teaching the Project Management session on Saturday, September 24.

Alpha Makes UTSA’s Visualization Lab a Reality

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has recently unveiled its newest technological gem, the Advanced Visualization Lab. The Visualization Lab houses a 14.5 X 6 foot wall of flat screen, 3D monitors used to promote computer-based research. Under its Job Order Contract with UTSA, Alpha Building Corporation transformed an existing computer lab into a state of the art research facility. For the renovation process Alpha removed the existing ceilings, flooring, lighting and air conditioning system, and replaced them with a new rooftop air unit, new ductwork, a reworked sprinkler and new flooring. In addition, a special ceiling and lighting were installed to minimize glare to the new visualization wall. To complete the look Alpha installed a glass entry way along with prominent signage to identify the lab. Alpha is honored to work in collaboration with UTSA on such distinguished projects. Alpha Safety Director Receives CSHO Designation

We are proud to announce that Ron Fuller, Alpha's Director of Safety & Quality Control, has received his Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO) Construction designation. This designation given by the Texas Engineering Extension Service, also known as TEEX, is for safety personnel who perform safety and health work on a daily basis in construction environments. These safety and health individuals also have responsibilities over the safety of others at various locations, including inspections and audits. The CSHO certification provides a solid and broad-based education in the Safety and Health field with 225+ hours of training by nationally recognized instructors.

For a third, consecutive year the San Antonio Business Journal has named Alpha Building Corporation as a "Best Places to Work". Over 200 companies in the region were nominated with only 50 companies selected. Alpha was selected based on the results of the online confidential surveys completed by its San Antonio employees.

Tulsa Tech Recognizes Alpha’s Safety Training Program

Alpha Building Corporation’s safety program has received recognition from clients, including NASA and the Corps of Engineers, along with numerous Safety Excellence awards from the Associated Builders & Contractors. Most recently Tulsa Technology Center (TTC) also recognized Alpha’s top-quality safety and training programs. In March Alpha held a 30 Hour OSHA workshop for its Tulsa office where several Tulsa Tech staff were also able to participate. Mark Deibert, the TTC Program Manager for District Construction, said that Alpha Safety personnel “did a superb job…we were all impressed with their vast experience and the manner in how they presented the material”. As Tulsa Tech’s Job Order Contractor, Alpha was pleased to be able to accommodate the Tulsa Tech staff in its mission to enhance its safety education program.

Alpha Building Corporation is pleased to be a participant of the 2011 San Antonio (SA) Youth Summit as an In-Kind Sponsor. The SA Youth Summit provides the opportunity for young adults from across the state to discuss important issues in their communities with their peers and community leaders. In addition, students also have the opportunity to sharpen their professional skills as they attend workshops and training sessions on topics ranging from applying to college to organizing a community service project. The event took place on April 5th at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

For a third, consecutive year the San Antonio Business Journal has named Alpha Building Corporation one of the city’s Top 50 Private Companies. This list recognizes and honors the contributions that these privately held companies have made to our local economy. This year Alpha was ranked number 21 on the list, moving up two places from last year. The awards luncheon took place on March 11 at the Westin Riverwalk Hotel.

Alpha President Receives an Inspiring Texas Women Award

The Women’s Business Initiative of Sterling Bank has awarded Kathleen Acock, President of Alpha Building Corporation, with an Inspiring Texas Women award. This award is given to women business leaders who have inspired others to educate, grow and lead within their communities. Mrs. Acock is among one of the ten winners selected in the state of Texas, including Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The San Antonio award recipients and nominees were honored at a luncheon held on December 1st at the Norris Conference Center.

Alpha Receives Multiple Safety Awards

Alpha Building Corporation was recently awarded four Gold STEP awards. The STEP awards are given by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) as part of their safety program. The Safety Training and Evaluation Process, otherwise known as STEP, provides an organized approach for analyzing and developing safety and loss prevention programs within members of the ABC. This year Alpha received the awards for our local chapter affiliations in the Arkansas, Greater Houston, South Texas and the Texas Coastal Bend Chapters. For over 20 years Alpha has provided customers with safe, quality and cost efficient projects through Job Order Contracting.

Alpha Honored at Trogdon House Dedication Ceremony

The Trogdon House is a historical landmark located on the campus of Tarleton State University, in Stephenville, Texas. Alpha Building Corporation, along with other businesses, were recently honored at a dedication ceremony held at the Trogdon House in gratitude for making the renovation and restoration of the house possible. The structure, which was originally built in 1923, served as the primary residence of the university president until 1982 and was later used for other campus needs.
The current university president, Dr. F. Dominic Dottavio, stated that “the architect and contractors paid close attention to keeping the historical integrity of the Trogdon House intact”. Alpha was delighted to participate in the preservation of this historical campus icon. Since 2003 Alpha Building Corporation has shared a successful partnership with Tarleton State University as their job order contractor.
Alpha Building Corporation’s UTSA Projects in the News

Several of Alpha Building Corporation’s projects have been featured in the news recently. The latest to be spotlighted is the Applied Engineering & Technology (AET) Library at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). This 2,200-square-foot library is 100% digital, meaning this library is bookless. All the books, catalogues and other reference materials are digitally stored and are available to download for the students. This is one of the many unique projects Alpha has successfully completed through their Job Order Contract with UTSA.
A second and equally significant project is that of the installation of an electron beam microscope, nicknamed “Helenita”. Standing over 9 feet tall and weighing more than 2 tons, Helenita is one of the world’s most powerful microscopes with the capability to magnify up to 20 million times the original sample size. UTSA knew that Alpha was capable of renovating the 1,600 square foot space within 12 short weeks. Since 1999 Alpha has been a proud partner to the UTSA Facilities Office and believes that every project, large or small, plays a key role in the future of this university.

Alpha Employees Certified as Trainers by the NCCER

Andy Hicks, Alpha’s Director of Business Development, and David S. James, Alpha Safety Officer, have been certified as trainers for the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Construction Academy. NCCER is an educational foundation that was created to develop standardized craft training programs to help address the critical workforce shortage facing the construction industry. The foundation, created in 1996, is affiliated with the M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Building Construction at the University of Florida. David James, who received certification as a Safety Instructor, began his career with Alpha as a Construction Superintendent, and became one of Alpha’s Safety Officers in 2006. Andy Hicks, who served for 14 years as the Project Manager for Alpha’s Work Order Requirements Contract at Texas A&M University, is credentialed to teach Project Management.

Alpha Building Corporation wins Business Partner Award

At the National Conference of the National Association of Educational Procurement, NAEP, Alpha received the Regional Business Partner of the Year award from the E&I Purchasing Cooperative. In 2007 Alpha was awarded a Job Order Contract to provide construction services to E&I’s member institutions in the organization’s Central Region – specifically in the states of Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. In the 2 ½ years since the contract award Alpha has provided assistance to the facilities departments of 18 colleges and universities in those three states, fulfilling the intent of the contract as a support tool for the schools.
Alpha Executives Participate in Texas A&M University System’s HUB Forum

Kathleen Acock, Alpha’s President, and Executive Vice-President, Richard Booher, were presenters at a forum hosted by the Texas A&M System’s Office of HUB and Procurement Programs. The forum was presented in Houston in order to inform area small, minority and women-owned businesses about potential subcontracting opportunities on upcoming System construction projects. Alpha was asked to participate as a representative of the Job Order Contracting industry, along with other area contractors who have projects under the A&M System’s Capital Improvements programs.
Alpha Building Corporation Awarded State Wide Contract

Choice Facility Partners, the cooperative purchasing organization set up by the Harris County Department of Education, has awarded a state wide Job Order Contract to Alpha Building Corporation. The state wide Job Order Contract will allow educational institutions and governmental entities to procure minor construction and renovation services using CFP’s competitively bid contract. This will allow reduced procurement and project completion times, while using the services of a qualified experienced general contractor who has been providing JOC services since 1988.
Alpha Employees Participate in Workday for Habitat for Humanity

Employees from Alpha’s corporate office had a chance to utilize their construction skills as they participated in a workday sponsored by the San Antonio Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS).
This workday provided an opportunity for Alpha employees, whose normal days are spent performing accounting, human resource or marketing functions, to show off their construction skills. Habitat for Humanity is just one of the organizations that Alpha has supported over the years, recycling building materials that have been salvaged from renovation projects as well as building Habitat homes.

The San Antonio Business Journal has once again recognized Alpha Building Corporation as one of the city’s Top 50 Private Companies. Alpha was number 23 on the list based on 2009 sales and growth, marking a move up from number 35 last year.
Kathleen Acock, Alpha’s President, credits this growth to the widespread acceptance of job order contracting as an efficient method of procuring construction, and Alpha’s growing reputation for providing quality construction and value to its client.
Alpha Recognized by ABC for Safety

Alpha recently received its fifth national Platinum STEP award from the Associated Builders & Contractors. STEP awards are given to contractors based on an evaluation of their safety record, procedures and education program.
Alpha’s safety programs are a commitment from the top of the organization down through every employee at a project location, and have been developed over a 40 year history that began with work for NASA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Alpha Celebrates 40 Years Down on the Ranch

In 1969 Alpha Building Corporation was formed by Gordon and Viola Kovich in Houston, Texas. In order to celebrate 40 successful years of providing construction services, Alpha brought its employees in to San Antonio from three states and gathered everyone at the Don Strange Ranch for a day of fun, catching up with old friends and making new ones.
This celebration was a chance for Alpha to say thank you to all of those employees who are out there every day keeping its clients satisfied and helping the company to become even more successful than Gordon and Viola Kovich could have envisioned back in 1969.
