Alpha wins Excellence in Construction Award
The South Texas Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors has chosen Alpha's renovation
of the Physical Plant Building for the University of Texas at San Antonio as the winner in the
Renovation under $4 million category this year.
The project involved the remodel of approximately 20,000 square feet, with upgrades or
modifications to all existing systems. The primary challenge to the successful completion of the work
was the fact that during the remodel of the first floor, and expansion of their space on the second
floor, the IT/Communications Department, along with the computer servers for the entire university,
would remain in the building, and working, during construction.
The project, a collaborative effort between Alpha, the UTSA Physical Plant and Jaime Beaman of
Casa Bella Architects, was completed in November 2007 and also included the build out of two floors
that house the Campus Police, Emergency Services, Key Control and Parking departments.
Ethics Class Invites Alpha’s President to Speak
Alpha's President, Kathleen Acock, has accepted an invitation from the UTSA College of Business
and the Ecumenical Council of San Antonio to speak at their tenth annual Business Ethics Symposium. With a theme of "Ethical Leadership in a Global Economy", the symposium is expected to address an audience of approximately 300 of the University of Texas at San Antonio's undergraduate business students, faculty and staff.
In 2007 Alpha Building Corporation was a recipient of the UTSA/Ecumenical Council’s Ethics in
Business Award. “Of all the awards that Alpha has received, the Ethics award is the one of which I
am the most proud”, responded Ms. Acock upon receiving the honor.
Safety Excellence Award
Alpha's Director of Quality and Safety, Ron Fuller, recently accepted our fourth straight National
STEP Platinum award from the Associated Builders and Contractors. The STEP award is given to
contractors whose emphasis on employee and client safety and health have resulted in exemplary
safety procedures and training programs.
"It truly is an honor and a privilege to be able to recognize Platinum level STEP award recipients for
their continued dedication to providing training and safe workplaces for their employees," said ABC
President and CEO Kirk Pickerel. "These companies have used the STEP program to evaluate and
build upon already stellar safety programs and become leaders in training and incident prevention.
Indeed, these companies continue to strive for our most important goal, to send every construction
industry employee home safe to their families, every day."
Employees Embrace Green Initiatives
The latest of Alpha's employees to achieve the LEED Accredited Professional (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) designation is Billy Harkins, Project Engineer for Alpha's Work
Order Requirements Contract at Texas A&M University. With the LEED AP credentials, Billy is able
to assist Texas A&M in its efforts to apply green building techniques to renovation projects in
existing buildings, and serve as an additional resource in their commitment to attaining LEED Silver
certification for new buildings on the College Station campuses. |
